Hi,

I am new to photography and all, and would like to buy a holga.

I am confused as to which model should i go for.

Is the flash very important? What about the colour and glass lens?

I have a budget, so I'm wondering if I can leave out some of those features.

Would appreciate any feedback!!

hi hi, welcome welcome,

Anyway, the models (excluding other models eg. K200, etc):-
1. Holga 120S: Basic standard Holga, plastic lens, no features
2. Holga 120SF: Same as S, but with a built in flash
3. Holga 120N: Bulb mode, tripod mount, hot shoe
4. Holga 120FN: Bulb mode, tripod mount, built in flash
5. Holga 120CFN: Bulb mode, tripod mount, built in colorflash
6. Woca/Holga 120G: Like the 120S, but with a glass lens
7. Woca/Holga 120GF: Like the 120SF, but with a glass lens
8. Holga 120GFN: Like the 120FN, but with a glass lens
9. Holga 120GCFN: Like the 120CFN, but with a glass lens

'S' or 'N' - Obviously, get 'N'.

Glass or Plastic - well, depends on u. I've read people saying glass is sharper. though many still prefer the plastic lens, cos, afterall, it's a toy camera.

Flash? - it's good to have flash, especially for the holga. do note though, if there's a built-in flash, there won't be a hotshoe for a external flash. If u're going for flash, get the 'CFN'.

so wat's ur budget like?

Welcome to lomotion, scuteroo!

If you're planning to buy more cameras like the lca, fisheye no.2, or other classic cameras with hotshoe in future(which is very likely and which also means an external flash will come in pretty handy), get the 120N, the one with hotshoe and plastic lens. If not, the 120CFN will please you for now.

The characteristic of a Holga is the dreamy vignetting toy cam effect. So why pay more for one that's supposed to yield sharper images?

Hope that helps!

My budget is as low as possible. Hahaha.

Thanks for the help! It really did help.

I think I'm gonna get either a 120N or CFN now, depending on how much pay I get this month.

Thanks again! =)

should i get the smena
or should i get a holga?

The smena 8M? Smena 8M uses regular 35mm fiilm which is cheaper. Developing and scanning are cheaper too. But there're many better 35mm film cameras around. The Smena 8M however may be a cheaper option to play with for a start.

The holga is a cheap and fun toy everyone loves and won't regret owning(no matter how many or whether they use them or not)! If you don't buy it today, you'll buy it tomorrow. Enough said.

I say, BUY BOTH!!!

That's why I said get the 120N, the one with hotshoe and use an external flash which is stronger! Hehe... If you already own the one with built-in flash, try using a higher ISO film. Or wait for a super sunny day! Or trash your current holga and get a new 120N!

1) Larger Apertures
2) Longer Exposures
3) Flash
4) Faster Films

guess these are some of the ways to counter cloudy/gloomy days for most cameras. The 1st one is out for the holga unless urs is modified. u can try the rest. I'd still prefer having the pic taken on a bright day though.

Longer exposure? Err... you'll need a tripod. I've seen some nice shots taken with a flash.

don't use flash, i hate them! it washes out your shots so only use flash when it's your last resort...

not so bad lah... I've seen nice holga shots taken with flash and it yields great vignets.

Yes, it's cheaper in HK. The factory is there but it's not in the city. As for accessories, it's pretty much what you can find at ebay.

There is a shop in Hung Hom, along Ma Tau Chung Road that sells the OEM Holga. I no longer have the address, it's not accessible by MTR and that is a very very long road...

hi guys im kinda new to this community too! too lazy to start a new thread man, so decided to hijack this one!(hope you dont mind = ) )

im relatively new to this and what i can say is that i've only owned a fisheye for a while before selling it(one of the worst decisions i've made). looking back at all the pictures, i think its really an awesome camera.

right now im deciding between a holga 120CFN and a fisheye 2. anybody got any comments about the fisheye 2? now that khloe's MO has ended, any idea where i can get a holga? also, i've read somewhere on this forum that a holga runs on 120film. any idea how i can modify it to one that runs on a 35mm one?

haha! sorry for all the noob questions here. theres just too much to learn!

PS:i've probably read most of the different sections in this forum and i must say that its a pretty tight nice little community you guys've got here! <3! = )
